If you want confident and independent learners it is essential you know how to boost self esteem in your learners. A classroom full of learners with high self-esteem will be a place where everyone achieves at their level of capability. Healthy self esteem is a solid foundation for life and helps determine success.

Self esteem is, as a general rule, established in childhood and nurtured throughout life. Learners are molded and shaped by the words and actions of others. As a teacher you are a significant person in the life of a learner so be mindful of your responsibility to boost self esteem in your learners.

Learners with high self- esteem are positive in their approach to life and learning. Learners with lower self-esteem may be withdrawn and negative in their attitudes. Self-esteem can be boosted if a learner is exposed to positive experiences.

As a teacher you need to be aware of your learners opinions and validate their feelings.

Why It’s Important to Boost Self Esteem in Learners of All Ages

Learners of all ages are vulnerable when learning new skills. To boost self esteem give plenty of time and encouragement so your learners can grow and nurture their own self esteem.

What you say to the learner is important, as words tend to stay with the learner in a positive or negative way. It’s better to give praise and be constructive in any criticism in order to boost self esteem.

Do not pick on lack of success but encourage and assist for a positive outcome; remember you are a role model.

Always show warmth in your responses to boost self esteem. Appreciation and a happy disposition go a long way to helping learners feel appreciated and cared about. Value how they perceive your responses, because this is what affects their self-esteem on a daily basis.

Overall, let’s not forget that the best reason to be mindful of how we approach our learners is because they are growing, and as adults we are the strongest influence in their lives and therefore we can help boost self esteem in the child. How we act and react to something is what teaches them to DO the same.

How to Boost Self Esteem in Learners with Damaged Views of Themselves

The reality is that as teachers, we not only get faced with teaching many different types of learners over the years, but we may encounter several different types of learners in the same room. How is it that we can boost self esteem when not all learners are at the same level?

It is inevitable that over time we are going to encounter learners that are at different levels in their lives in general as well as with self esteem and the challenges it brings. This reason alone means that we as teachers MUST be CONSISTENT.

The consistency is directed towards us personally from day to day; however we need to be certain that we are consistent with each and every learner in front of other learners to boost self esteem.

This means that we cannot be positive and uplifting one day and negative the next because of something personal we deal with. To be an educator, there is plenty of training that we can do to help us remain focused on our learners, after all that is what we signed up for as teachers!
